types of hairloss

hair loss: alopecia
Alopecia is a type of hair loss, which is increasing rapidly, and effecting men and women of all ages. Alopecia is caused by your own immune system (white blood cells), mistakenly attacking your hair follicles, resulting in the arrest of the hair growth stage. These affected follicles become very small, drastically slow down production, and grow no hair visible above the surface for either months or years.

There are different types of Alopecia, most common is Alopecia Areata, which is a sudden loss of hair in the result of patches on the scalp, this can lead to total hair loss known as, Alopecia Totalis.  Alopecia not only can affect the loss of hair on the scalp but can also affect body hairs resulting in total body hair loss known as Alopecia Universalis.

Alopecia can also affect facial hair, with the loss of eyebrows and eyelashes. Chiquel offers alternatives such as 100% reusable human eyebrow wigs, false eyelashes, semi permanent pens and powders.  Men can also take advantage of these innovative products with specially designed male eyebrow wigs.

Scarves and turbans are also great for quick cover up, we offer online head fashion wear with a selection of quality pieces ranging in various styles and colours for daily and nightly wear.

hair loss: chemotherapy
Battling cancer is hard enough so losing your hair can be an added difficulty. A patients self esteem is an integral factor in the success for their treatment and feeling good about themselves is a huge step on the long road to recovery. Having an understanding of why patients lose their hair during chemotherapy and evaluating the options available when it happens, will help cancer suffers cope at a difficult time.

Chemotherapy is a treatment designed to significantly restrict cell growth. Hair loss begins 7-10 days after the first treatment and will be severe after 1-2months. Hair regrowth is approx 4-6 weeks after the cessation of chemotherapy treatment. We often suggest a shorter hairstyle just before treatment so that losing hair will not be a dramatic change.

In the completion of chemotherapy, hair grows at a rate of just over a centimeter per month and will take approximately 6 months for hair to return to full thickness and strength. During this time patients are refined from colouring own natural hair with semi or permanent colours or subjecting it to stress until six months after the end of the chemotherapy.

hair loss: female pattern baldness
Pattern baldness hair loss is the most common type of hair loss. It usually follows a typical pattern of receding hairline and hair thinning on the crown and is caused by hormones or genetic predisposition. Female hair loss, if of a generic nature, the pattern of thinning and hair loss will spread outwards from the crown area.

Pattern baldness does not indicate a medical disorder, but it may affect ones self-esteem or cause anxiety. At Chiquel we provide on site consultations and discuss a plan to help assist you dealing with your loss whilst finding alternatives.

A great product for pattern baldness, or for women who experience thinning only in the frontal area of their scalp, crown area and particular around the hairline is the custom designed top pieces, lace frontal hairpieces or 3/4 hairpieces.
